Bonnie Berneil Ockinga, 78, of Wheatland, Wyoming passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital.Bonnie was born on April 13, 1935 in Morrill, Nebraska to parents James Neil and Ollie Eva (Hudson) Shaver. She married Kenneth Ockinga on February 19, 1955. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was loved by all due to her sweet, kind, and caring, helpful nature.Bonnie shared her many talents selflessly. She enjoyed craft projects of all kinds from knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting and painting. Her children and grandchildren overflowed with sweaters, clothing of all types, Halloween costumes and Christmas stockings. She knit hats for the preemie babies at the hospital, taught line dancing, volunteered to deliver meals on wheels and always had an open door for neighbors in need of child-care, while also making herself available to help out on the farm. She was a successful gardener and an excellent cook (especially her famous cabbage burgers). At times, she could be coaxed into playing her accordion, yodeling and singing. She had a great sense of humor and loved to tell jokes, enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Funniest Home Videos, working cross word puzzles and playing scrabble. She was one smart lady!She was an avid reader and enjoyed learning. She received an Associate Arts Degree from Eastern Wyoming College and was a part time substitute teacher.She was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church volunteering in many capacities and gave generously to several children’s homes.Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, of Wheatland, WY, her children; Keith (Shelly) Ockinga of Wheatland, WY, Kathy (David) Torres of Wellington, CO, Nancy McKenzie of Sheridan, WY, a sister, Jane Nelson of Sun City, CA, grandchildren; Tiffany (Jeremy) Jackson, Mark Barrett, Riley Ockinga, Cassie (Devan) Royer, Justin Ockinga, Seth Ockinga, Caleb Ockinga, Sarah Ockinga, Josiah Ockinga, Joshua Ockinga, and seven great-grandchildren.A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 17, 2014 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Phil Wold officiating. A reception will follow at the church. A Graveside Service will be held on her birthday, April 13, 2014 in Wheatland, WY.Memorials to honor Bonnie may be made to the Sheridan Senior Center at 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801.Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
