Jimmie Joe Giles, (Jay), age 82 of Sheridan, Wyoming returned to his Heavenly Father on May 12, 2017. Jimmie was born December 15, 1934, in Kansas City, MO, to Thomas and Josephine Giles. After World War II his family moved to Salt Lake City, UT, then on to Southern California. Jimmie attended Redlands High School but left early to help support his parents. Jimmie then secured a job with Santa Fe Railroad, where he worked eight years as a Carman.On November 5, 1953, Jimmie met and married Iris Gwen Giles.  Jimmie and Gwen had two girls and a boy: Di Ann born August 2, 1955, Connie born October 6, 1956, Randy born February 14, 1959. Jimmie then worked for Kaiser Steel Mine at Eagle Mountain, CA working as a lead mechanic over the locomotive and track equipment. After 12 years for Kaiser Steel, Jimmie moved his family to Centralia, WA and worked as a heavy duty mechanic at the WIDCO Mine. Jimmie later found employment as a Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Inspector, and was assigned to the Sheridan, Wyoming office. In 1978, he put in for a transfer to work in the Office of Assessment in Dallas, Texas where he stayed a couple of years. On October 6, 1981, Jimmie was awarded the Medal of Valor Award by the US Department of Labor when he and wife, Gwen came upon a fiery car accident and rescued four occupants from two vehicles. Jimmie then transferred back to Sheridan, WY and resumed duties as a Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Inspector. In 1991, Jimmie and Gwen divorced and he later retired from the government and took a year off to pursue his passion for Photography, Golfing and Bowling. With too much time on his hands, Jimmie went back to work, for the Sheridan Walmart Bakery. At age 81, Jimmie finally retired and continued to live in Sheridan until his death. Throughout the 1950\'s, 1960\'s and 1970\'s Jimmie enjoyed working with kids, helping them with wrestling, golfing, swimming and diving, skin and scuba diving. He also coached Little League baseball and football. Jimmie served as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and was an aquatic director at the YMCA in San Bernadino. Jimmie was a certified Life Saving and Water Safety Instructor for the American Red Cross. Jimmie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and he loved the Lord. Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and a sister. Survivors include his sister Patricia Thomas, (Dan) of Calimesa, CA, daughters, Di Ann Benke (Dan) of Joshua Tree, CA, Connie Lewis of Longview, WA, and Randy Giles (Bobbi Kay) of Torrington, WY. The family wants to also recognize Dave and Ann Pittman of Sheridan as special friends. Memorials can be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 211, 2040 Colonial Dr., Sheridan, WY 82801.A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A reception will follow at the church.
