In Loving Memory of Joan Gail Wieland

Joan Gail (Ehlers) Wieland was born on November 8, 1933, in Ravenna, Nebraska to Orrin and Margaret (Gridley) Ehlers and passed away on November 14, 2023, in Sheridan, Wyoming at the age of 90 years and 6 days.

Joan grew up in Ravenna, Nebraska where she attended and graduated as valedictorian of her class from Ravenna High School. She was awarded a Regents Scholarship to the University of Nebraska/Lincoln. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Ravenna. Joan was married to Clark Denzler Wieland on March 10, 1951. She attended UNL, and later University of Nebraska/Omaha, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. She received a Masters degree in Social Work from UNO in 1978.

Joan and their five children accompanied Clark to Germany for his Army tour as Dispensary Commanding Officer from 1959 to 1962.

Joan served as Director of Social Services for West Nebraska General Hospital in Scottsbluff, Nebraska from 1972 to 1979. She was the Quality Control Coordinator and Staff Assistant to the Director at Ft. Meade, South Dakota, Veterans Affairs Hospital from 1979 to 1986. From 1986 to 1991, she was a Social Worker at the Biloxi VA Medical Center. The last years of her career were from 1991 to 2000 as a Social Worker at the Sheridan VA Medical Center.

Joan and Clark both retired in Sheridan. Joan was a 50-year member of P.E.O. She was a descendent of a Revolutionary War patriot on her mother’s side.

Joan was appreciated by her family, friends, co-workers, and patients for her expertise, perception, compassion, steadiness, and courage. Her quick wit was loved by all who knew her.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Clark D. Wieland, M.D.

Survivors cherishing her memory include her children and spouses: Cynthia (Wieland) Schluckebier and husband, CDR Ret. Daniel of Aldie, VA, Cheryl (Wieland) Grubbs and husband LtCol. Ret. Lowell of Springfield, VA, MSgt Ret. Clark R. Wieland and wife Cheryl of Sheridan, WY, Laura (Wieland) Niehaus and husband William C. of Loveland, CO, Pamela Wieland M.D. and husband Eduard Talens of Heath, TX; seven grandchildren: Laurel (Schluckebier) Kortum, M.D and husband Robert, M.D., LtCol. Ret., Carl Schluckebier and wife Rebecca, Geoffrey Grubbs and wife Rebecca, Eric Grubbs, Michelle (Niehaus) Le and husband Tien PharmD, Daniel Bosteder and wife Katelyn, and David Bosteder: 10 great-grandchildren; cousins, and many friends.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements are being planned for interment at the National Omaha Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Joan G.
