Dr.Thomas Warren Westing, 77, passed away in Sheridan , Wyoming on November 30, 2014. He spent many years in university teaching and administration , having earned his doctorate in animal science at Virginia Tech . In the early years of his career, he taught at California Polytechnic Institute in San Luis Obispo, California. Later, he was professor and Associate Dean of Agriculture at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. During this time, he traveled to countries such as Rwanda, Burundi and Haiti to establish and develop agricultural programs in partnership with these governments and the University of Arkansas. During his career, Dr. Westing was also president of an international research consortium. He frequently presented his research at international conferences, and was invited to conduct research in Greece. In his later years, after retiring from the University of Arkansas, he was an adjunct professor of animal science at the University of Colorado in Fort Collins.Dr. Westing\'s lifelong love of animals and agriculture developed while growing up on the family ranch in Madera , California . During these years, he was active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America, and produced sheep that won grand champion at the California State Fair several years in a row. In his twenties, he served in the United States Navy as a torpedo man first class on the submarine the USS Remora. He was an avid runner, and competed in several marathons. He was also a recreational pilot.Dr. Westing is survived by his daughter, Sylvia Byrd and grandsons, Daniel and Ryan Byrd of California; his sister, Rebecca Stone of North Carolina; his nieces, Allyson Stone of North Carolina and Melissa Steckler and family of California; and numerous cousins in California,Florida and Idaho.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Future Farmers of America.Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
