Calvin Jewell passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2020 in Billings Mt.On September 9, 1937, Calvin William Jewell was the second of three sons born to Fleeta Hatch and James William Jewell in Colonia Dublan, Chih., Mexico. He spent his childhood in the Mormon Colonies until moving as a junior to Phoenix Union High School where he played on the varsity tennis team.Calvin served a two-year LDS mission to Uruguay/Paraguay. Calvin graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts and Spanish. In March of 1962, Calvin was married and sealed to Diane Asay in the Salt Lake City Temple.After moving to Diane’s hometown of Lovell “for a short time,” he worked many jobs including the GW’s sugar factory, laying carpets for his brother-in-law, teaching in Lovell while continuing his education at University of Montana, Bozeman, to complete his master’s degree.Calvin spent his lifetime as an educator and teacher.  He taught in Lovell for several years and all over the Big Horn Basin and Park County. He had state award winning Spanish students in every school. He was also a principal, industrial arts teacher, and Special Education director. Calvin switched his educational focus out of the classroom to become an executive for the Boy Scouts of America. He ran the Buffalo Bill Boy Scout Camp for nearly 15 years. His four daughters spent as much time at camp as any boy. Camp Buffalo Bill saw many family reunions while Calvin worked there.Family has been the focus of Calvin’s life.  Calvin and Diane were blessed with five children, Ilene, Alyson, Audra, Dallas and Suzette.  Calvin was an amazing father and instilled in his children his love of education.  He taught them the importance of hard work, self-reliance, honesty, integrity and persistence.  Calvin learned from his mother valuable life skills like baking, canning, gardening and sewing and made sure to pass on those skills to his children.  While the kids were growing up, Calvin would often make homemade chili and scones.  Half the high school would come and eat on those occasions.  Calvin was an avid woodworker making anything and everything his family requested.  He made beautiful chairs, dressers, cutting boards, tables, etc.Calvin was a fierce supporter of his children and grandchildren.  It was rare for him to miss any event or activity.  He loved watching, cheering and bragging about them to anyone who would listen.     Calvin loved to travel.  He took his family to almost every state and to Mexico several times.  Calvin and Diane enjoyed many cruises and one of his favorite trips was to Hong Kong.  Calvin and Diane served a mission to Belize where he was the mission counselor and they both worked for the Church Education System.  He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has held many callings.  He was an amazing Sunday School teacher and scriptorian who will be very missed.Calvin had an infectious sense of humor.  He was always telling a joke, funny short story, amusing song or anecdote.  He had a great laugh and smile.  He leaves behind his wife, Diane, of 58 years, his children: Ilene (Bob) Henley and sons Dominic, Derek (Danielle), Devan (Ellie); Alyson (Larry) Taylor and daughter Breann; Audra Jewell; Dallas (Kimberly) Jewell and daughters Aryana, Kylee and Mckenna, and Suzette (Brad) Jewell and children Katelyn (Tyler) Showalter, Joey (McKeale), Tristan and Trevor and 11 great-grandchildren and one grandchild due in December. He is preceded in death by his infant sister, parents, and his in-laws.His family consider him to be a scientist, architect, handyman, and builder of anything. He lived well and loved whole-heartly. He is much loved in return and will be very missed.Funeral arrangements are being made by Kane Funeral Home of Sheridan, WY.  Services will be held Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 10 am in the East Chapel of the Lovell Stake Center.  Viewing held at 9 am in the West Chapel.Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with local arrangements.
