View Service Folder | Click for Video Tribute Donald Eugene Burtis, 88, of Sheridan, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2015, at the VA Mountain View Living Center. Don was born near Imperial Nebraska on the farm of his parents, George and Neva Burtis on March 17, 1927. During World War II he served in the Seabee’s Division assigned to the 20th Naval Construction BN Detach 1107 and was assigned to heavy equipment in the South Pacific on Manus Island. He married Maxine Beard on August 13, 1947, in Colorado Springs, Co.Don and Maxine made their home on a farm in Hayes Center, Nebraska until April of 1958, when they moved the family to Sheridan, Wyoming to work for Allen Fordyce. His first years were working with soil and water conservation, and making a dam on the Prairie Creek Ranch east of Sheridan. Throughout his life he was involved in many aspects of ranching and farming, including cattle, pigs, sheep, farm crops and farm equipment mechanics. “Spring had arrived when Dad brought Mom the first bouquet of wildflowers from the pasture.” Don was very active in Boy Scouts, 4-H, family days filled with picnics, ice skating, toboggan parties, fishing and other family activities. Weekends, special occasions, and holidays are still a big part of the family’s lifestyle. His hobby of woodworking created many beautiful gifts. Don and Maxine were members of The First Church of the Nazarene. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, sisters: Elva Reed, Leona Taylor; brothers: Dean, Ralph, Robert, and Hubert Burtis and daughter –in-law Roberta. He is survived by his children: Wayne Burtis, Beverly (Clifford) Gorzalka, Arlis (John) Dona , Carol (Jerry) Jandreau, Larry (Beth) Burtis, Mark (Cindy) Burtis, and Nancy (Steve) Wollenburg. Grandchildren: Darcie (Darrell) Smith, Kevin (Nancy) Gorzalka, Vickie (Allen) Pullen, Jane (Justin) Fitch, Sally (Eric) Quade, Kelly (Katie) Jandreau, Michael (Jillyan) Jandreau, Laurie (Cody) Landis, Randy (Bree) Burtis, Jessica and Kyle Taylor, Cody Burtis, Matthew (Lacey) Burtis, Cayla (Mitchell) Braun, Meranda Pfau (Zachary Goes Ahead). Great Grandchildren: Haley and Kolter Smith, Emily Gorzalka, Kaiah and Ayden Pullen, Joseph Jandreau, Maxton and Mclain Braun, Benjamen and Jack Goes Ahead and numerous nieces,nephews and sisters-in-law.A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at Kane Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, Sept 3, 2015, at Kane Funeral Home with military honors. Pastor Jody Hampton will be officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Military Honors. A luncheon reception will follow in the Kane Reception Hall.Memorials to honor Donald in lieu of flowers may be made to Sheridan Senior Center Meals on Wheels Program at 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801, The First Church of the Nazarene, 859 Bellevue Ave, Sheridan, WY 82801 or memorial of your choice.
