About:

Shirley Ann Cherry passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, June 20, 2020, the first day of summer, at WestView Heath Care Center in Sheridan, Wyoming.Shirley Ann was born on November 6, 1938 in Bentley Oklahoma, to Bernice Johnson and William Louis Scott. She spent her very early years in Oklahoma before moving to Wyoming.Shirley was the oldest of five children. She graduated from Cody High School, Cody, Wyoming in 1956. After graduation she worked for Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator.Shirley eventually settled in Sheridan, Wyoming where she worked and retired from the VA Medical Center after 32 years. During this time Shirley married Dave Heide. Together they had 2 children, Glen and Trina. In 1979 Shirley married Jim Cherry. They were together until Jim’s death in 2011. Shirley and Jim called Sheridan and the beloved Big Horn Mountains home but loved to travel America. Lured by the beauty of the high plains desert and the surrounding mountains, they finally settled in St. David, Arizona to wait out the long Wyoming winters.Shirley loved the desert and its unusual beauty. She made St. David her permanent home after Jim’s death, finding her joy in a good book or game of Bingo or Scrabble with the many friends she had made in Arizona. She returned to Sheridan in 2018 to be closer to family.Shirley was loved by many. She was a kind and gentle person who loved spending time with family and friends. Shirley’s greatest joy was her two grandchildren and her three great-grandchildren. She was lovingly known as “Sis” by her siblings. Her nieces and nephews have loved the many birthday cards she has sent over the years, each with a piece of gum or a dollar bill inside. Shirley always worked hard behind the scenes to make sure everyone had a good time. Her ever-present, shy smile will be missed by all.Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Bernice and Johnnie Harris, her husband Jim Cherry and her brother Melvin Harris of Cody, Wyoming. She is survived by her son Glen Heide and his wife Lynette, daughter Trina Heide, granddaughter Rachel Heide, her wife Samantha and great-granddaughter Hannah, and grandson Joe Heide, his wife Tia and great-grandsons Kent and Kolt, all of Sheridan. She is also survived by sisters, Dorothy Meyer and husband Joe of Cody, Wyoming, Linda Schaugaard and husband Dan of Spanish Fork, Utah, and Carol Persson and husband Pat of Laramie, Wyoming as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. As a family, we cannot express enough appreciation and gratitude to the staff members at Elmcroft Senior Living, Saddle Ridge Rehabilitation and Westview Heath Care Center for the care and friendship they gave Shirley over the last year, but most importantly over the last 3 months.Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with local arrangements.
