Helen Mae Miller
About:
Helen Mae Miller died May 4, 2010 at Sheridan, Wyoming where she had moved with her husband Robert E. Miller in May 2005 to be closer to family. She was 89 years of age, born January 26, 1921 at Portland, Oregon to Sidney A. and Idona I. Hatcher, nee Carroll. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. An eternal optimist, she made everyone around her happy, too. Helen Mae grew up in Shelton, Washington where she studied and taught dance. She graduated from Shelton High School in 1939 where she was salutatorian and a graduation speaker. She attended the University of Oregon for three years before graduating from the University of Washington in 1943. After graduation, Helen Mae returned to Shelton to work for her father at Simpson Timber Company. In 1947 she went to Saudi Arabia to work; it was there that she met Robert E. Miller at a New Years Eve party and they each discovered that the other was an accomplished dancer. They returned to Shelton and were married in St. David's Episcopal Church on November 20, 1948. They remained in Shelton where her husband went to work for Simpson Timber Company and in 1956 were transferred to Humboldt County, California, settling in Arcata. In 1962 they were transferred back to Shelton, and then returned to Humboldt County in 1968 where they lived at Bayside and where Bob continued to work for Simpson until his retirement in 1980. Soon after retiring, the Millers spent nearly a year in The Philippines where Mr. Miller worked as an engineering consultant. In retirement, the Millers enjoyed traveling and spent their summers on Little Skookum Bay near Shelton. Helen Mae was active in various local and national organizations and particularly enjoyed helping young people further their education. She was a member of P.E.O. for 66 years, serving as the local chapter president at both Shelton and Arcata, and was an active member of Chapter B in Sheridan. She was a member of the American Association of University Women in Shelton, Arcata, and Sheridan. She was a Cub Scout den mother and for many years was a volunteer helper in the kindergarten at Jacoby Creek Elementary School near Arcata. Helen Mae loved her time in Sheridan: her friends at P.E.O., Oliver's for Sunday brunch with family, bridge at the Senior Center and with her special four-some, shows at the Wyo and Carriage House theaters, and time with her wonderful care-givers. She was a Christian, and was recently baptized at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Sheridan. She loved her visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and sister Carol Jeanne. She is survived by three sons, Robert E. Miller (Sandra) of Shelton, Washington; Gary A. Miller (Susan) of Sheridan, Wyoming; and Ronald F. Miller of Madison, Wisconsin. She is also survived by three grandsons, Robert E. Miller (Theresa) of Sheridan, Wyoming and Bradley L. Miller (Anna) of Lacey, Washington, (sons of Robert E. Miller); and John A. Miller of Denver, Colorado, (son of Gary A. Miller). She is also survived by four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Edwin Hill (Denise) of Cumming, Georgia; Susan (Hill) Preissler (Michael) of Lewisville, Texas; and Robert Hill of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and six step-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Jeanne Moller of Tacoma, Washington and her large family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 57 years, Robert E. Miller, in 2006. Funeral services will be held in Sheridan, Wyoming in June followed by a gravesite service in Shelton, Washington.
